Education

The education sector provides various opportunities for aggregating energy and flexibility using a virtual power plant to energy trade into various markets. Through aggregation, we can enter into new energy markets that would not otherwise be available to individual schools or buildings within a campus area.

Supporting the Pathway to Net Zero in the Education Sector.

London South Bank University

In 2020, we were awarded an innovation grant with our partner London South Bank University. Here, we looked across the portfolio of sites and selected ten to take forward for energy trading.

The electricity load across the ten buildings averaged just over 1MW. Our philosophy for trading comprised Demand Side Response of 150kW, supplemented by three 300kW batteries in three separate locations, all connected by our virtual power plant platform.

This set-up provided a return on investment of eight years, leaving another twenty years of trading when considering battery cell replacement. BankEnergi is supporting the University’s pathway to net zero as we find ways to optimise building controls and trade any surplus energy.
